SOLID COLORS WORK BEST
AVOID SHARP CONTRASTS
Black, white, pastels, earth or jewel tones all work. Just be certain that everyone is wearing the same color or colors that compliment each other. Rule of thumb if you wouldn't wear it in one outfit don't have members in the portrait wear it.
Khakis and jeans in the same color are perfect. Solid burgundy, hunter green, navy, brown and rust are great options for tops. White is a summer favorite. Black is always a winner. Everyone wearing the same solid color or top is ideal.
Black top to bottom works best for everyone. The focus will be on the interaction of family members. Dark colors will also photograph appropriately for b/w images.
Avoid stripes, patterns and florals. The attention should be on faces not on the clothing. If one person is wearing a lighter color than the rest all the attention will be drawn to that individual .If one person wears white EVERYONE must wear white.
Ideally everyone should dress in the same color. or color range. By focusing on faces, instead of being distracted by different colored clothing, each person's unique personality is featured. Pastels , mid-tones and darks all work. Lay each individuals outfit on the bed and make certain they will all compliment one another in one portrait.
People have different skin tones. Wearing long sleeves insures that all the attention will be drawn to faces.
